Creations
From concept to delivery, I am very hands on with projects. When I meet the people I create for I get a feel for their personal tastes and values. After that I throw myself into the project encompassing every aspect of it as far as humanly possible. I prefer not to farm out the manufacturing to production companies as I feel it dilutes ones creativity. From the design to the technical making processes, I like to be safe in the knowledge that it's my own work. However, if I require technical assistance, I only use exceptional companies that have proven their worksmanship and reliability to me over a number of years.
Wedding rings
Wedding Rings are a special challenge. They have to be robust as they are intended to last a lifetime and symbolically they reflect the personalities and relationship of those wearing them. I observe the things they like, the colours they wear and the values they admire to create items that suit them.
Bespoke commissions
I think my gift for getting a feel for someone's personality is integral to creating a successful design. It's the unexpected challenges that make it so interesting. I get asked questions like; "I want a samuri sword kilt pin", "Can you make a cat-bat collar"? or "I need something for my daughter made out of her grandfathers' watch chain". I have the pleasure of extracting what the customer is expecting and designing and creating a unique thing of beauty.
Repairs & alterations
Repairs are notoriously difficult as they often have a huge sentimental attachment and need to be handled sensitively. I will always do my best to repair a piece of jewellery so that it can be used. If it can't be repaired I would suggest letting it evolve into something else that can be worn and cherished. Re-working jewellery, especially if made with valuable metal or stones makes jewellery the ultimate recyclable product as it remains precious regardless of it's shape or form
Collections
Collections tend to evolve and revolve around a word, or sometimes a whole story. I love to take one word such as Spiral or Armour or Dragon and see how far that takes me with the creations that I make. The creation of a collection may form around one concept, but during the making process, the designs tend to evolve.
Projects
When I have the opportunity to get stuck into a project that stretches my knowledge and ability, I jump at the chance. Especially if it gives me the incentive to get involved with a community or group creative. From writing a research paper about the Whitechapel Art Gallery, assisting with a largescale blacksmithing project, to helping set up the End of Year Show for A level students at the local college, I love getting involved.
